Much of a muchness

Things that make you go 'hmm'…

We have ways of making you talk, Mr Bond…

The unthinkable happened yesterday. I ran out of paper. Not the decorative paper I use for the covers – I think I have enough of that to last me a year or so – but the plain paper I use for the pages of the books. I couldn’t leave the house as I was expecting a parcel to be delivered so I used a book block I bought ages ago from Falkiners instead. It’s large – A4 size – and for once meant I could make a book with lined pages. The Japanese chiyogami paper is also from Falkiners.

I’m really disappointed. My other source of paper is Paper Source in the US. I buy most of the contemporary papers I use from them as they have such a great range. I was lucky enough to visit their store in Beverley Hills when I was in Los Angeles last year, it was amazing. The shipping costs are quite high but are usually reasonable and worth it for the variety and quality of papers they offer. But a week or so ago, I placed an order with them and the shipping costs had doubled! In fact, they cost more than the cost of the paper. Apparently, they have changed couriers and the new couriers have different charges (something about including customs charges) so I’m afraid I can no longer ship paper from them. My only hope is that I can get Paper Source to deliver to one of my friends in LA and then they can send the paper to me – I need to check if this will be cheaper because I am devastated!

‘Booo!’ to Paper Source!

OK rant over. I gather it is a big day in the US as far as the Democratic nomination battle between White House hopefuls, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Well, maybe this will help you make your mind up. Click on the image!

Nice moves….you may have spotted it is based on a clip out of the movie, Ace Ventura and those knees really belong to Jim Carrey…

To continue the movie theme (you know how I like a nice theme) here is a great cartoon I stumbled the other night. “We have ways of making you talk, Mr.Bond….”

Took me a second to see what was happening but it is SO clever. And silly. Now please excuse my self indulgence. You know how much I love Eddie Izzard and I couldn’t resist sharing his take on James Bond. (Usual strong language alert)

And I’m going to resist having a gratuitous photograph of luscious Daniel Craig at this point. I will admit I did look for one and have just spent a very pleasant time gazing at Google images of my hero, until I came across an eye-watering nude shot of him in the bath and as I have now come over all unnecessary, I am going for a cold shower….

    Hi Diane,

Sorry about the shipping costs of your paper.

The clip is funny. It has transposed the political personalities well. The one oh Hillary is hilarious – it looks so apt. Same with Bill and Barbra. Barack Obama is of mixed race but definitely with African blood, yet he is one African American who can’t dance well — the clip also puts an appropriate take on him!

As for Jmaes Bond… did it take you a little longer to bathe? :-) –Durano, done!

Oooh! This book has lined pages. yay! Sorry about the shipping costs. That really stinks.

It is a big day in the primary race and I wrote about that today. I’m from Pennsylvania so I will be voting tonight. Obama!

Cute comic. If you like stick figures, this comic is one of my faves:

Have you ever heard of If It’s Paper? This is a store I love and I have no idea if they could help you, but perhaps it’s worth looking into.

Love your books … how could I acquire one? I carry a journal-type book with me at all times for my jottings, which are many, and I am always looking for a purse-sized book that inspires me.

The clip is hysterical … so apt. Right on the money as usual, Diane dear.

Daniel Craig … niiiiiiiiiice. I feel your pain. He was awesome in Casino Royale. My drug of choice is Johnny Depp … he does … er … things to me.

Durano – I hadn’t thought of your take on the dancing clip! As for my shower, I am all cool, calm and collected now :-)

Paul – it would be a prefect book for a writer – A4 size lots of lines and pages to fill up with great stories…… :-)
I liked the stick figure cartoon – and I also liked your post on Charlie and Lola. Two blogs to read you on now….

Happy voting! Good man, and may the best MAN win!

Jenny – No I haven’t heard of ‘If it’s Paper’ I will check it out though. I am in dire need of more contemporary designs and I cannot seem to find them in the UK.
I am seriously going to open my Etsy store soon (honest!)

Yes, I can see that Johnny Depp is luscious too. I have so many crushes at the moment – George Clooney, Daniel Craig, Johnny Depp, Ken Watanabe, Christian Bale – the list goes on. I shall just have to concentrate on finding a real life man and stop day dreaming about movie stars :-)

I just love Falkiners. Always try to pop in when I am in ondon. I don’t what it is (well I do because it is fantastic) but I am like a kid in a sweet shop as soon as I go through the doors…. instant trance like state ahhhh!! :-)

    Diane
Beautiful Book!! I used to make books also. I really loved it. And when you are done, you have this great book to sell, give away, or write in yourself.
    Nice work.

70steen – Falkiners is paper heaven, I love it and I do buy a lot of paper from them (in fact they sent me a hide of leather as a gift to say thanks for mentioning them so often!) but unfortunately they don’t have the range of modern designs that Paper Source has – I only wish they did!

Tom – there’s a question! I’m not very ‘artistic’ as such, can’t paint or draw, but I find something like bookbinding (even though it is quite a technical pursuit – measuring and precision) appeals to my creative side as I enjoy working with colour and pattern and deciding what goes with what to create a pleasing harmony. I also like the fact that you have got something useful at the end of the process. I also enjoy calligraphy as again it is (or can be) a very measured, precise activity.
You don’t say what you can do? Do you draw or sculpt?

I only found bookbinding after a long exploration of various hobbies – tapestry, embroidery, silk painting, calligraphy then making books which has struck a chord.

Kim – it’s quite a useful book this one. I think a writer would like it as it has lovely A4 sized cream lined pages… I’m pretty sure whatever you end up using yours for, it will fill it with loveliness!

I adore Eddie Izzard, he makes me and my boys laugh hysterically :-D

Yes, I will give you Tom Wilkinson and I will raise you Liam Neeson…….

MaryAnnArtist – thank you! I love making books too but when you have over 120 of the things lying around the house the need to dispose of them becomes quite urgent!

Bwahahaha…oh your cold shower comment cracked me up! And i thought Hilary/Ace dancing would be the funniest thing on here (can’t do the Eddie video yet…kids around).

Bummer about Paper Source’s new shipping policy. :(

Gorgeous book, and the lined paper makes a nice range to your Etsy offerings (you are working on your Etsy shop, right?).

Now I’ve got to put my automated response system on full alert – could take hours. Just time to heat up a Fray Bentos pie with all the trimmings.

    Frozen peas, tinned potatoes….

Oops, just noticed the badge has vanished…..I’m off to repair it…..
