Things that make you go 'hmm'…

Mothers’ Day advice

I don’t have a new book to show you today as I was out all day yesterday. I had a very self indulgent day and went shopping in Exeter. It was really nice because I didn’t want anything in particular, so I could just browse and I ended buying a few nice things. Usually when I go shopping, I have one thing in mind that I need and I get increasingly frustrated at not being able to find it and end up coming home without whatever it is. I have chronicled here many sorry tales of hunting for shoes, boots, dresses – all of which I’m certain were in the shops until I started looking for them…..

The shops were full of Mothers’ Day gifts, cards and flowers (we celebrate it in March in the UK) and I was very smug as for once, I actually remembered to post my card to my mum in plenty of time – usually I carry it around in my handbag for days on end and only get round to posting it at the last minute.

I started writing this at 5.30am. I went out to dinner last night to one of my favourite restaurants, the Riverside which is in West Bay (shown in the photographs above) and had a fantastic meal. The Riverside is (mainly) a fish restaurant. Here’s what I ate. Clams in garlic, ginger and chilli followed by fillets of brill in a sorrel sauce with crispy spinach and then warm pancakes with passionfruit ice cream. I then made the BIG mistake of having not one, but two cups of strong coffee. As I don’t usually drink much coffee, it has kept me awake all night – and when I say all night I mean it, I haven’t been to sleep yet!! So I have been finding things to write about which are suitable for the day before Mothers’ Day. I have some suggestions for my sons (and anyone else in need of MD advice)

1 If you are thinking of sending a Mothers’ Day photograph, here’s how not to do it ….

2 These are good gifts for mothers everywhere….

3 This is a very BAD gift….

So, now you know.

And as it’s Mothers’ Day, here are some pics of my little angels….

Doesn’t time fly?

Talking of which, it is now 7.30am so I going back to bed to see if I can catch up on a couple of hours sleep…

    Whoa! Mother’s Day.

    Help Google.

Ah, middle Sunday in Lent….England. Brass Americans still have ten weeks to go.

Strapping lads there in your before/after picture.

    Hilarious video at the piano.

    Scrumptious (Truly) Riverside meal.

I hope you did stay up all night.

I could have done without the colon thing. If you think that health advisement will keep the rest of us from cheese and chips, you’ve got another felt book cover coming.

I love the YouTube video, I am still laughing. I know what you mean about how time flies. My 2 older ones have flown the nest and I now have 2 grandchildren, but I also have a 7 year old daughter who keeps me occupied.

Mark – I went back to bed at 7.30 and slept until 9.30 – the postman then woke me up but as he was delivering flowers, I couldn’t complain :-)
You will notice the colon thing came from LA. And I resisted the temptation to say ‘Only in America’ :-)

Lizzy T – I have watched it half a dozen times now and it still makes me laugh out loud. Two grandchildren and a 7 year old? That’s quite a range! It’s nice that your grandchildren have such a young aunt!

I love your jewellery and your knitted/crocheted keyrings by the way. And I am most envious of your Etsy store. One day…… :-)

Lol you don’t think colon hydrotherapy is a good gift? back to the drawing board.

Someone doesn’t like me…I used to be able to watch videos at your blog, and now I can’t. Argh! Can you please tell me the search words for that video and I’ll go to YouTube for it? Thanks!

Your boys are very handsome (and very cute when young)! I’ll bet they got all their looks from you. So the older one’s the one with the patch of hair cut off by their dad, was it? ;)

Where do you find the hilarious materials? Colon hydrotherapy??! Priceless!

I wish I had had dinner with you. What a marvelous spot and the food sounded incredible! I love, love, love seafood (oh wait, I already told you that…LOL!).

Hope you got a good nap in. :)

Just a quick note here as I’m a little busy. I’m finally doing the edits on my NaNoWriMo novel tonight.

Happy Mother’s Day and I hope you got some sleep.

Your message bottle is now afloat in the vast blogosphere ocean. You are Message In a Bottle #102.
Feel free to toss in a bottle whenever you feel the urge to send a message. The blog ocean is always open. You never know what might wash ashore.

Jane – not for this mother it isn’t! Eeeew!

Teresa – what a shame! OK the video is at this URL

As I have two lovely boys – I just adore this video. I just watched it yet again and it still makes me chuckle! My boys are gorgeous. And of course they get their looks from me :-)

I’m so lucky living where I do as it is not only very picturesque but there are LOADS of great seafood restaurants (went to another one last night)

Had a great night’s sleep last night so I’m ready for action today!

I actually found the colon hydrotherapy cutting in a newspaper in LA called the LA Weekly. It was amongst a pageful of ads for plastic surgery and botox injections and laser hair removal. I kept the page as it made me laugh and when I came across it a couple of days ago I thought it would be a good time to share it :-)

Paul – so glad you are finally ready to face the edits and look forward to reading the results and to hearing your opinion, now that time has lent a little distance to them :-)

Thanks for the good wishes, I slept like a log last night so am full of beans today!

Mimi – I just had a look at some of the messages. It’s such a fun project and I enjoyed reading the wide variety of messages you are collecting (without littering up a beach) :-D

    Happy Mother’s Day, m’dear!

I know you are not my mother, but the sentiment remains.

  11. Teresa March 2, 2008 at 4:18 pm

OMG!! That was so funny! I showed it to my husband and sons and they totally cracked up. It’s like something they would do. dh is from a family of 2 boys too. Thanks for the URL!

And Diane, you are, hereby, no longer allowed to talk about eating good seafood unless you send me some too! LOL!

  12. Durano Lawayan March 2, 2008 at 4:45 pm

    Hi Diane,

Where do you get these video clips? This one is painfully funny. It reminds me of my elder brother when we were in our early twenties. :-)

You have two great looking sons. Does the video remind you of them too? Happy Mother’s Day to you. Looking at your sons, you must be a remarkably caring mother. :-)–Durano, done!

  13. Diane March 2, 2008 at 6:19 pm

Why, thank you, your Lordship – most kind of you!

Teresa – It’s great isn’t it? Still makes me laugh!
OK I won’t mention seafood again as I’m not sure a bag of prawns would make it to your neck of the woods :-)

Durano – so funny isn’t it? I think that is part of the appeal of the video – having two sons I can picture them having a similar argument…. :-)

  14. AmyH March 2, 2008 at 8:36 pm

I really needed to watch that video today! It’s hysterical. I haven’t laughed so hard in a while. I’ll have to check out their web site.

All I ever want for Mother’s Day is a big, beautiful bouquet of peonies. Unfortunately their not in season for Mother’s Day, so they’re extremely expensive, and I hate to spend a lot of money on flowers. Paper, yes! Flowers, no! I hope those handsome boys do something nice for you–definitely not some colon hydrotherapy!

  15. Diane March 2, 2008 at 11:01 pm

I love peonies! I have some beautiful peonies in my garden – in fact I photographed them and put them on Flickr. They are gorgeous. I’d rather grow them than buy them.

I’m off to stay with Number 2 son this week, he is away at uni, so I’m looking forward to that….

  16. nursemyra March 3, 2008 at 10:32 am

    love the colon ad :-)

  17. Diane March 3, 2008 at 12:06 pm

It would be a weird gift at any time of the year but for Mothers’ Day?
Not for me, thank you very much :-)

  18. Eric "Speedcat Hollydale" March 4, 2008 at 2:24 am

Mothers Day …. is it May already?!?!! Good night! I must have slept a long time. Rips Van Wrinkleskin, that’s what they will call me.

    Hello Diane :-)

  19. Diane March 4, 2008 at 8:34 am

Hello Speedy! Good job we have Mothers Day before you because now you others who have it in May can make use of my advice :-D
