Passionate about Polar Bears

This book is one I have made which I think would be a good kiddies book. I bought a few children’s printed papers, thinking they might be useful for covering photo albums for new babies but really there is no reason why they can’t be used for notebooks too.

I do like Polar Bears. Two of the funniest jokes I have ever heard involve Polar Bears. One was a very long and convoluted joke which can be strung out for ages by having the baby Polar Bear ask various Polar Bear relatives the same questions before springing the punch line. Here is the abridged version.

Baby Polar Bear says to Dad Polar Bear, ‘Am I a Grizzly Bear?’

Dad says ‘No, you are a Polar Bear’.

Baby Polar Bear then says, ‘Am I a Brown Bear?’

Dad says ‘No, I told you, you are a Polar Bear!’

Baby Polar Bear says ‘Am I a Koala Bear?’

Dad is now getting very exasperated and says ‘I just told you – you are a Polar Bear. Not a Brown Bear or a Grizzly Bear or a Koala Bear. Why are you asking such stupid questions?’

Baby Polar Bear: ‘ Because I’m bloody freezing!’

Well, it made me laugh.

The other joke is just as silly but does need some local knowledge….

Why don’t Polar Bears eat penguins?

At this point you are supposed to display your marvellous knowledge of the animal kingdom by saying that it’s because Polar Bears live at the North Pole and penguins live at the South Pole. To which I reply ‘No, it’s because they can’t get the wrappers off’. This joke is only funny if you know that Penguins are also a chocolate bar available in the UK…..

To end today’s post with a topical theme, here is a Polar Bear cartoon.

hee hee, I like the polar bear jokes. and I love your books.
I’m also in the uk and was wondering if you would mind telling me where you find your papers to cover your books? because I’m having dificulty finding anything other than scrapbook size paper.
    Thanks

Hi Amy – glad you like the jokes! As for paper, well, I either go up to London to Falkiners on Southampton Row or Paperchase on Tottenham Court Road.

Falkiners has a web site and will send stuff to you. I also buy a lot from the US, Paper Source and Paper Mojo are excellent- they have web sites too. Only problem is shipping is expensive but the range of papers is amazing. You can find all the URLs on the Book Links page of this blog.

Hope this helps – and hope to see some of your books one day!

I really enjoyed reading your blog!

I’m not sure where you are but there are bookbinding workshops every where. A good place to find out more is if you check out the Book Arts Forum (see Book Links page)

Back in July, I posted a series of photographs showing how the books are constructed, if you want to check that out too. I did one class to see how to sew the books together and then figured the rest out after seeing this method of binding at cailun.com (see my links)

    Hope this helps!

Haa!! I love this post :-)
I’m ashamed to say that I did not realize that penquins only lived “South”. On the other hand, no wonder a bunch of Polar Bears are outside my window. I thought they wanted my chicken!
Great looking book Diane. Hope your weekend is full of happiness and smiles…. I send one over from Minnesota.

I think this polar bear book is my favorite. Does that make me silly? I guess I’m already silly so the point is moot. Anyhow, I love this one (really!).

    Funny cartoon too!

Pics of Moscow – glad you enjoyed them!

Speedie – thanks for the smile and glad you liked the book and the jokes. Surely you are too speedy and skinny to attract Polar Bears!

SW – you like Monty Python so you must be pretty silly :-) I loved the video you posted – I hadn’t seen that sketch before. I had to shrink the cartoon so it’s a bit hard to read….

P-p-pick up a Penguin, they were my favorite snacks, and on the same tack, my dad used to suck endlessly on those ice mints with the polar bear on the top, at least he did till his teeth rotted.

    Great post, as usual.

    cheers

I may have to post more polar bear pics – I’d forgotten about Fox’s Glacier Mints :-)

Thanks for the TWO reviews this week over at your blog The Pisstakers.

Your funny comments about my blog are always appreciated!

Can anyone tell me about a large model of a polar bear that used to stand outside an antique[?] shop opposite Goodge St. station probably in the 1950s? I have been talking with a man, 100 next May, who recalls it. Thank you.
