Finding Mr Darcy….

May 6, 2008

I originally made this photograph album as a gift for a friend who celebrated her birthday last week, but as with the best laid plans, I didn’t finish it in time and so ended up buying her a gift instead. This album is much larger than the usual books I make (as you can see from the photograph) and was subsequently much more difficult to make as handling large pieces of gluey paper is really difficult. Well, it is for me! This was also going to be a dry run for an even larger album I am going to make for another friend who wants it to match two albums she already owns. I’ll keep you posted how I get on…

I’ve had a really action packed weekend. It was a Bank Holiday here in the UK. As is often the case, the weather was horrible - very wet and cold but I still managed to have a good time. The weekend consisted of a friend’s birthday party, meeting up with various friends and lots of eating, followed by lots of walking to counteract the effects of the eating. You may have noticed my blogging has been sporadic recently, to say the least . Unfortunately/fortunately, this may have to continue as my social life has picked up markedly mainly due to the fact I have (at the risk of sounding like Jane Austen) - a potential ‘gentleman caller’. Here is Jane’s advice on how to find Mr. Darcy…. (it comes at about 1m 15secs)

It seems the amount I am able to blog varies inversely with the state of my social life! The social drought since Christmas has led to a very productive phase on the book-making/blogging front but this pace is difficult to maintain at the moment, so I intend to aim to write something every few days rather than every day. Just so you know. If I suddenly pick up the pace on the blogging front, you will know why….and I will be back to this….

Just as everyone returns to work after the holiday, the weather has improved and today was wonderfully warm and sunny - great for tennis - apart from the fact I didn’t give my tennis skirt it’s first outing of the year (as the sight of my white legs would have probably blinded the other players) so I was actually too hot wearing joggers. As it was such a gorgeous day, I put the hood down on the car for the first time this year when I was driving home and drove along the coast road. I spotted a glimpse of blue by the side of the road so I parked and found this. Click on each image to see a full sized version.

Well, I suppose we can forgive you for the sporadic posting since a potential gentleman caller is involved. And happy birthday, though late. I hope your weekend was excellent despite the weather.

I love the paper you used on your beautiful photo album. I visited Faulkiner’s web site today and was quite smitten with it. I think I may need to buy some for myself.

We have tons of the same blue scilla in our garden. Actually a little hill covered with it as it spreads like crazy, but I just love it!! Happy birthday!! You are so lucky to have a spring birthday! I have a winter birthday, (january) which leaves no chance for celebrating outside. I love the paper on your books too….rosebuds…beautiful and so spring!

Oops! Sorry, both! It wasn’t my birthday party - it was the friend I made th album for! My birthday is in November….I have amended the post accordingly :-)

AmyH - the paper in Falkiners is fantastic as I never tire of saying! I love this one particularly, it’s very Rennie Macintosh, I think.

DianeCA - I love the bluebells. The colour is so intense, I have them in my garden too but there is something special about seeing them in the woodland setting….

Congrats on the new beau, although we will miss you around here :)

Neat book. I liked the picture of the binding.

Also, I wasn’t the first commenter. I’m slipping, I guess. Must be the beard.

…… and just up the coast a tad it’s been lovely for days!

I’ll have to approve Mr Darcy you realise - I’ll keep a close eye on things …….. I’m nothing if not an interfering ol’ git.

Well, Diane, if it was for a true Darcy, it’ll probably be worth it quitting blogging at all ;-) Not making books, though. A woman has to have something of her own ;-)

  • 8. Diane  |  May 7, 2008 at 1:38 pm

Kim - it’s nice to get out and about certainly! I’ll see if he has a friend in your neck of the woods :-)

SW - I hope the beard isn’t slowing you down…. :-) We need an update photo. Must be getting pretty long now!

DP - did you have nice weather over the bank holiday then? That doesn’t seem fair…. :-)
You can vet him whenever you like - or maybe not…..

Astrid - no, I’m sticking with the books and blogging! Just not every day!

Diane, say it isn’t so. We will miss you. but, we will also wait patiently until time allows you to come back on a regular schedule.

And thanks so much for the beautiful pictures of the bluebells. I lived in New England for almost a decade and I miss the gentle beauty of spring so much

Here in Oklahoma we just have a wee spring and boom then everything is in full bloom and we hit summer.

have a good day my friend!!:-)

  • 10. Diane  |  May 7, 2008 at 2:02 pm

Shinade - I’ll still be blogging - just not every day….
It was easy during the winter when the weather was bad and I wasn’t going out much, to hole up and make books and blog every day but now the sun is shining and the beach beckons me to go for walks, I’m going to blog every few days rather than every day :-)

Sooooo … a gentleman caller, eh? But you’re not making your Mr. Darcy up, as the wise Jane said one must do? LOL! Do tell, dearie …

  • 12. Flowers (Tom)  |  May 7, 2008 at 9:57 pm

gorgeousness all round with that post. i especially enjoyed the pictures of your pitstop!

  • 13. Diane  |  May 7, 2008 at 10:29 pm

Jenny - early days yet…I’m not even sure I should be allowed out - I am so rubbish at picking men - always fall for the dishy but tricky ones. Maybe I should follow Jane Austen’s advice and make one up….. :-)

Tom - glad you enjoyed it all. The pit stop was particularly gorgeous :-)

  • 14. Lunes  |  May 8, 2008 at 12:10 pm

Diane - how could you make Mr Darcy up! Shudder at the thought.
Your absence will be missed, in fact I hope you are gone for ages - oh you are so naughty! Kylee

  • 15. Teresa  |  May 9, 2008 at 3:05 am

Oooh, Diane, do tell! Or not. ;) Just have tons and tons of fun! I’ll miss your frequent posts and gorgeous books, but I’d rather you be out having a good time with the gentleman caller.

The album turned out beautifully; can’t wait to see the larger one for your other friend.

We need to get out for some tennis too. The boys are rusty and need the practice.

  • 16. Lunes  |  May 9, 2008 at 2:09 pm

Obviously she’s away having fun as she’s not answering her comments……oh naughty you!

  • 17. Diane  |  May 9, 2008 at 3:09 pm

I’m here! I’m here! Honestly, you lot, what are you like?! Imagining all sorts!

I’m backing off posting a bit because I have been guilty of allowing blogging to take over my life a bit, I must admit. Since I split with my last gentleman caller, I’ve not had much else to do and it was winter, so I holed up and blogging was a life saver.

Posting every day - especially producing a book a day and doing all the research to find interesting stuff to back it up is very time consuming and I just thought that as I am going out more socially - and the sun is shining (for the moment) I might only post 3 times a week instead of every day.

How could I possibly give up you lot? You have seen me through some dark days - but the sun is shining now. :-)

    Hugs to you all!

enjoy and I hope all goes well with Mr Darcy :-)

  • 19. Lunes  |  May 12, 2008 at 2:31 pm

yeah yeah we believe you! Thousands wouldn’t though!

  • 20. Diane  |  May 14, 2008 at 7:10 pm

70steen - I love that film - so good - I really identify with Diane Keaton :-) I think I would have chosen Keanu Reeves over Jack Nicholson though…..

    Kylee- you are incorrigible!
