Can anyone tell me about a large model of a polar bear that used to stand outside an antique[?] shop opposite Goodge St. station probably in the 1950s? I have been talking with a man, 100 next May, who recalls it. Thank you.

P-p-pick up a Penguin, they were my favorite snacks, and on the same tack, my dad used to suck endlessly on those ice mints with the polar bear on the top, at least he did till his teeth rotted.

I think this polar bear book is my favorite. Does that make me silly? I guess I’m already silly so the point is moot. Anyhow, I love this one (really!).

I’m ashamed to say that I did not realize that penquins only lived “South”. On the other hand, no wonder a bunch of Polar Bears are outside my window. I thought they wanted my chicken!

I’m not sure where you are but there are bookbinding workshops every where. A good place to find out more is if you check out the Book Arts Forum (see Book Links page)

Back in July, I posted a series of photographs showing how the books are constructed, if you want to check that out too. I did one class to see how to sew the books together and then figured the rest out after seeing this method of binding at cailun.com (see my links)

hi! i just stumbled upon your blog and i love it. i have done a lot of creative crafty things but i have never done or even seen book binding before. it’s beautiful! i love your books! i would love to learn and explore this art too…are there classes and such? or is it something one could teach ones self? the polar bear jokes were funny too :)

Hi Amy – glad you like the jokes! As for paper, well, I either go up to London to Falkiners on Southampton Row or Paperchase on Tottenham Court Road.

Falkiners has a web site and will send stuff to you. I also buy a lot from the US, Paper Source and Paper Mojo are excellent- they have web sites too. Only problem is shipping is expensive but the range of papers is amazing. You can find all the URLs on the Book Links page of this blog.
