Double inspiration

November 30, 2007

Two friends of mine have a lovely shop in Dorchester called ‘On the Table‘ which sells the most gorgeous, contemporary kitchenware, tableware and furnishings and a range of yummy foods too. It is always my first port of call when I need to buy a gift. Today, I bought some beautiful glasses for a 30th wedding anniversary gift (I’m off to a party on the 8th) and as usual, I couldn’t resist buying myself a little something too and I also saw this wrapping paper. It’s by Emma Bridgewater who makes really funky, fun kitchen and tableware. It has the spots on one side and the stripes on the other. I couldn’t decide which pattern to use on the outside of the book and so I made two :-)

So if you were to buy these books, you could also have the matching mug, teapot, bowls, plates, cake tin, biscuit barrel, oven gloves etc etc…..

You could also buy this tea towel while you are at it…cue the gratuitous Daniel Craig photograph.

The other news of the day is that my ex has turned into a rock star! His album, called ‘Songs for Sale‘ by GTA, is now available for download on iTunes, which is very exciting!

My bit of glory came a couple of days ago when I was ‘Blog of the Day’ over at ‘Fuel my Blog’ You will have noticed that I now have a little widget-ty thing in my sidebar and every time someone clicks it, it is recorded as a vote over on the Fuel My Blog website. Well, I was for a day or so, top Art/Design blog and then I was ‘Blog of the Day’ and was sent this little badge to display…

Well, that’s my 15 minutes of fame :-)

  • 2. tulibri  |  November 30, 2007 at 11:36 am

Diane, talking of tableware: I would love to spoil my guests (and myself, ha!) tomorrow with a decent trifle for dessert. You wouldn’t have by any chance a recipe for me? :-)

  • 3. Diane  |  November 30, 2007 at 12:08 pm

Yes, it is! I have added a photo of him - just for reference purposes, you understand….

Nice! If you ever sell these ones, they have to stay together. You could never split them up. They look too nice together :)

Congrats on the FuelMyBlog minutes of fame, too!

Love the ensemble and the contrasting dots and lines. Totally awesome. Congrats on the Fuel My Blog recognition as well. I was pleasantly surprised to see your smiling face on their homepage!

Forgive my Yank-ness, but what is a trifle dessert? I thought I had it all worked out when I discovered pudding isn’t really flavored goop like it is over here in the states. Now this trifle is confusing me…

Astrid - My pleasure - and goose! Where do you live and what time shall I arrive? :-)

SW - It would be like separating twins, they need to be together! Congrats on the NaNoWriMo progress, by the way - so impressive!

Peteej - Thank you! It did seem weird to be on the home page - I expect they give every noob a turn as Blog of the Day!

Now, trifle…. well, it is a layered dessert which usually consists of a layer of sponge cake pieces (usually soaked in a fruit juice and sherry or some form of alcohol) sandwiched together with jam (jelly). This then has a layer of fruit, then a layer of custard and then a layer of whipped cream topped off with chopped almonds or grated chocolate or more fruit. As you can see, it’s very flexible and there are infinite variations including substituting mascarpone for the custard or syllabub for the cream.

These are the links I sent to Astrid!

Bet you are sorry you asked now! Oh and it has to be served in a glass bowl so the layers can be seen!

ohmygosh, I LOVE lidded jars AND polka dots. You are an evil enabler, do you know that? And to have matching books to go with it? Genius!

  • 11. strugglingwriter  |  November 30, 2007 at 2:55 pm

Thanks Diane. NaNoWriMo has been an experience, something I never thought I would accomplish.

I was going to make an analogy to separating twins too, but decided against it.

I agree with Struggling Writer, they are most definitely a set. :)

  • 13. Diane  |  November 30, 2007 at 4:00 pm

Lori - Emma Bridgewater does sell some sweet things. If you are into polka dots check out the website. Evil enabler? Me? :-)

SW - here I go personalizing the books again….
I hope you are cracking open the champagne when you get to 50,000 words!

  • 14. tulibri  |  November 30, 2007 at 7:50 pm

Ha! I bought a glass bowl. Now let the games begin! I’m going for the one with the syllabub. I will try to take a mouthwatering picture before eating it :)

  • 15. Diane  |  November 30, 2007 at 8:07 pm

Jon - I shall have to find a way of packaging them together!

Astrid - My mouth is watering just at the thought of your trifle! We need to see photographs!

  • 16. laketrees  |  December 1, 2007 at 8:11 am

all this talk of trifle is making my mouth water…..have you ever made the trifles in individual “parfait ” glasses?
I adore the books and the tea set …right up my alley….
fancy…. an ex who’s a rock star….will have to check out the music..
grats on the fuel my blog award…. *clappies*
as for Ken and George….you can have both of them Diane :)
    I’ll have Daniel :D

  • 17. Diane  |  December 1, 2007 at 2:15 pm

I’m still waiting for the trifle pictures - may have to make one myself instead! Yes, I have seen individual trifles - I just always thought it is such a fiddly thing to make anyway, making individual ones was just a step too far - but then I am very lazy….

*Bows politely* thank you for the applause :)

Oh goodie! Ken and George. Maybe we can swap sometime?

  • 18. Ed  |  December 2, 2007 at 11:57 pm

Those spotty tea pots look fun but I think I would go cross eyed concentrating on the cup and spill the tea

    Ed

  • 19. Diane  |  December 3, 2007 at 12:04 am
